Overview
In existing reef ball burials, human ashes are used to build artificial reefs after cremation, however, a self-destructive cycle forms. Cremation emits carbon oxide which accelerates global warming and causes coral bleaching which endangers global coral reef systems. In order to protect corals, humans build artificial reefs by cremation.
In this project, humans give back to the marine ecosystem, reborn in the sea. Death is not seen as the stopping point of life, but a transformative part of life. Biological, chemical and physical reactions take place on the human body as humans interact with the marine system, providing value, giving back to nature, and creating new forms of living.
Eventually, the reef settles down with a complex and living coral reef microsystem with glimpses of it through special waves which rise to the surface.
